Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday

Make love your goal

My favorite Holiday? New Year's Eve. I use the holiday as a great excuse to participate in one of the great American pastimes: self reinvention. Beginning around Christmas Eve, I enter a week-long ritual of self-assessment and self-reflection, my long contemplative stretches offset by frenzied writing and note-taking. I review where I've been and where I want to go. I think about my family. I think about every aspect of my life, sometimes employing self-helpy, new-agey terms like "holistically" and "centering" and "enchilada", and decide this year, it will be different!

Guess what? Every year, I've been right!

Check out this cool review from Charles De Lint, which can also be found in the new issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction, here. A good review is always sweet, but having a writer that I admire as much as Mr. De Lint weigh in especially special.

Almost sixty degrees here in Connecticut. Went running this morning and a deer crossed my path yet again, maybe about ten feet away from me. Tried to catch her, failed. Next time.

"Make love your goal"- yes!

I am not one to make New Year's resolutions. I think that is because since 1978 I regard years in terms of the school calendar- august through may with that fabulous two month break at the end. The new calendar year means I have to remember to write 09 instead of 08. Going back to school on Jan 5, I will have the same students, will be teaching the same subject, and will be gearing up for the same bleeping assessment test.

I have had an interest lately in what other people celebrate and honor, especially around this time of year, and plan study further some of their celebrations as they come up this year.

Wait, was that a resolution?

I hope you and your family had a good holiday :)

I always have the same resolution:
Stop acting like a 3-yr-old on a chocolate high.

It hasn't been working all that well. XD

Happy New Years!!

Hey Sandi!

Can you name that song? Each of the love quotes that head my blog entries are song lyric snippets.

I don't make resolutions, either--I make plans. I think there's a difference.

We had a great holiday--how about you and yours?

Take care,
Dan

Hey Meg!

Keep acting that way, as long as you don't come down with the sugar blues afterwards!

Take care,
Dan

No resolutions! Just plans!

Hey Delaney the Undead!

LOL! One winter my brother got into three deer-related accidents--I had visions of a herd of Bambis throwing themselves on his hood.

I'm determined to touch one before the winter is over...

Take care,
Dan

Hey Denelian!

Thank you for your loooooooong post and for this one, and thanks especially for all the nice comments.

There are plans for another book. Several. Kiss of Life will be out next May and somewhere on my blog (I forget where) you can find the beautiful wraparound cover Hyperion did for it.

Take care,
Dan

Never saw the point in New Years, except for people to make resolutions to lose weight, resolutions that they never keep, and for people to get together all over and get drunk at one time. Nothing is open New Years because everyone has a hangover.

But a New Year plan? Tempting...

That IS a good review, and De Lint is definitely a discerning reader!

ok, so I cheated and googled it. Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood? What's WEIRD is that OR Melling mentioned that song in her blog recently (bc of the line about keeping vampires from your door and how odd that is for a Christmas song).

A New Year's plan-I'm on board with that idea :)

We had a great holiday. My nephew is almost four and Christmastime is so much fun with a little kid around.

Somewhere I imagine you hunched over a yellow legal pad, writing "#64. must catch deer"
Best wishes for the new year and new book

Hi Imthe'laugh'in'slaughter,

I can guarrantee that I will not be hung over on New Year's Day. I might, however, be sleep deprived.

Take care,
Dan

Hello Jeanne!

A couple good reviews in one week! Time to stop reading my own press!

Take care,
Dan

Hi Sandi!

Yep, Frankie it was. And that is strange about OR Melling mentioning it as well. She's right, though--using love to keep vampires out of the house isn't usually high on my list at Christmas time.

Take care,
Dan

Hi Kevin G!

"Must Catch Deer" actually made the top ten.

And for the record, I only use illegal pads to write on.

Take care,
Dan

Hey Daniel. While watching Tv over the holiday break I came across a video of a man being attacked by a deer. The first thought that came to mind was, "Hey! Daniel got his deer! And it got him back..."

So this is just me checking in to say, "Be careful." He may be an angry deer who woke up the fateful morning you decided to go jogging saying, "I'm going to attack the first man who tries to touch me today."

Have fun jogging. ;)

Speaking of plans- one of the things I plan to do this year on my blog (here and at myspace) is showcase books that I think people need to read. (I'm sorta tootin' my own horn here, but my friends and students read the books I suggest most of the time.)

Generation Dead is the first one.

Just wanted you to know :)
