Words Fail, Sometimes

I just learned through a message group I subscribe to that a personal hero of mine, the author David Foster Wallace, took his own life last night. His novel Infinite Jest is one of my favorite books. He was only 46.

I don't have the words to express how I feel right now.

I'm really sorry. I know how it feels, and it's hard to explain. It's a loss on a personal level, to something that makes up part of who you are, as opposed to a loss that marks a physical presence of a person close to you in the reality of your life.

Read the book again. :)

Hi Rachael,

That is incredibly well said, I appreciate it.

It sounds very corny, but one of my dreams/goals/whatever since becoming a professional writer was to meet DFW. I have a list of people I'd love to meet (I'm really a fannish person)but he topped the list. I'm sorry I'll never get the chance. I'm sorry he won't be writing anymore, I'm sorry for him, his family--mostly I'm just sorry.

But I am taking your very sound advice to heart.

Thank you,

Dan
